THE ROUTE IS SITUATED NEAR Fouriesburg 30 km from Clarens in the beautiful Eastern Free State.


Route Description:

Day 1 - 10km:

Marked with a white footprint. Route starts at the base camp and moves up along the mountain to Bushman rock art.  People who suffer from vertigo will find the chain ladder difficulty.  On top of the mountain, it is snack time and later right at the top is a breathtaking view.  At the back of the “kloof” you can see far in the future.  The route now descends down the mountain and on a clear day the Matuti mountains can be seen.  A mountain that looks like a large ship can also be seen.  The route now passes a sandstone rock avalanche and finally a Bushman shelter.


Accommodation – Basecamp:
The base camp was established in 1886.  Here a local Reverend cared for the women while the men were on commando during the Anglo Boer War.
Accommodation has 8 beds with mattresses and sleeps 2 in permanent caravan, hot showers and flush toilets.  Large lapa with braai facilities, iron pot and kettle are available.  Fridge, freezer, stove and microwave are also provided for your convenience.

Own cutlery, bedding, flashlight, binoculars, toilet paper and insect repellent.

Stone Goats, duiker, Klipspringer, baboons, porcupines and hyraxes. Fish can also be caught at little Caledon.


Bird Life:
A wide variety of bird life found, such Verreaux Eagles, guinea fowl.  Ducks can be hunted.  Lovely Yellow-billed duck also breed here.
