How to get there

 

Travel to Pilgrim’s rest – Two options: Take N4 to Mpumalanga through Sabie (R539) to Pilgrim’s Rest or else via Lydenburg (R37) – the Robberspass.  Another option is to travel via Longtom Pass, (Lydenburg).

To reach Morgenzon Plantation, take the R533 for 8km on the Robbers Pass road and turn off to the right as you reach the prospector’s Hiking Trail signpost at Morgenzon.

Pilgrim’s Rest hut is situated 1km from town (Pilgrim’s Rest) on the road to Graskop / Sabie.  Follow the signage posts to the hut.

Starting Points

 

Parking is available at Pilgrim’s Rest and at the Morgenzon Forest Station 2,5 km from Morgenzon Hut. 

At Morgenzon vehicles must be left at the forestry station before 17:00 to be locked away. 

For the duration of your stay at Pilgrim’s Rest hut, you may leave your vehicle at the hut. When starting the hike, please park your car at the Pilgrim’s Rest Police Station, 1.8km from the Pilgrim’s Rest hut, on your way to Morgenzon.

 

On the Prospector’s trail, maps must please be used as reference and the trail markings must rather be followed.


 

Trail Options

 

Peach Tree Creek (Circular 2 Day )

This special interest trail focuses on the environment in which the early gold miners sought their fortunes.  You will see old Diggings, coco pan paths, historical railway paths, mines, rivers, and streams, all remnants to a

bygone era.  The main focus is the gold mining era within this living museum.  You will have sufficient time to enjoy the environment as well as the various shops, museums, stories and world famous pub in Pilgrims Rest.

Peach Creek 2 Day

 

Your hike departs from Morgenzon Hut via a path along the plantation edge and grassland before descending to the mountain stream.  Continue through the indigenous forest and descend down Columbia Hill.  Follow the small stream before joining the Blyde River where you can enjoy a wonderful swim.

Black Hill 3 day Trail (2 nights accommodation)

 

Park car at Morgenzon Forest Station and start Hiking immediately.  Descent into a gully that forms the upper reaches of the Clewer streams and after crossing the stream, contour through pine trees and then follow a section of the Robber’s Pass for a short distance.  Just before reaching the new Robber’s Pass road the trail deviates through pine trees, dropping to the level of the Clewer Falls.

Morgenzon 3 Day

 

Blackhill is one of the highest points in this area and provides you with excellent views, at sunrise and sunset.  To reach the Blackhill Lookout the trail descends into the Clever valley before climbing through beautiful indigenous forest

 

with waterfalls and pools, scarce fynbos and mystical rocky outcrops.  The trail returns via a route inextricably linked to the early gold miners, passing through the exquisite clivia bush and interesting Robbers Pass.  The trail continues

 

along the escarpment edge before descending down a small gully and entering a stand of pine trees.  A few historical kraal walls still exist amongst the rocks.  Several pools occur along this rocky area until the trail leaves the stream and winds up at some rocky ledges to a viewpoint overlooking the Ohrigstad Valley.

Prospector/Morgenzon (4 Nights)

Prospectors 5 Day Trail

 

To really experience the feeling of “Here comes another pilgrim to his rest” you must hike the Prospectors 5-day trail.  The trail provides hikers with opportunities to experience both the cultural environment of the early miners, as well as the beautiful area that they mined in, including many different habitat zones ranging from indigenous forest, grasslands, fynbos, rocky outcrops, riverine bush, mountain sponge areas and only a bit of pine plantations.  Various points of cultural interest have been included such as the original Robbers Pass and other historical wagon routes - long forgotten.
